Bruce's first audition with Tex Vinyard to join the Castiles. This exact date is unknown, but some details about this period are known through interviews with Tex. I cannot claim that this is 100% accurate, and is largely an educated guess on my part.

This audition is believed to have happened on June 2nd, and didn't go super well for Bruce. Tex apparently told him to "come back when he knew at least 5 current rock hits." Bruce apparently returned the following night, and impressed Tex so much with his quick study that an audition was set up with the other members of the Castiles.

This audition is the only one with a possible verifiable date. According to an interview with Dave Marsh, Tex is quoted as saying, "It was raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock". After checking historical weather records for Freehold, only June 3rd, 1965 is listed as having a significant amount of rain.

All of the songs listed here were taken from Dave Marsh's book Bruce Springsteen on Tour: 1968-2005. They are listed as songs Bruce might have learned for this audition, and cannot be taken as fact. With Tex gone, and these events having happened almost sixty years ago, it's likely the exact songs will never be known. |

Bruce's audition to become a member of the Castiles. This audition is believed to have happened on June 5th. See 1965-06-03 for more details on the dating of these events.

The song "Haunted Castle" is listed here, but it could also have appeared at the Vinyard rehearsal on June 3. I found an interview with George Theiss from 1986 with Mike Carosi of the Commonwealth Times (Virginia Commonwealth University student newspaper) who said the following:

Times: When Bruce came back the next night after he was told "to come back when he learned five songs," do you remember what the songs were?

Theiss: You're talkin' about ancient history. Let me see, what were we playin' then? I think one of them mighta been the B-side of "Louie Louie": "Haunted House."

Actual date unknown. After joining The Castiles in June 1965, they underwent "extensive" rehearsals during June and July. This event was listed on Brucebase, and is likely a placeholder for this entire period of rehearsals. |
